A Message from Rabbi Alder...

This past year has been one of grief and isolation due to Covid, but we have the opportunity, with the
arrival of Purim, for a little communal fun.

Purim tells the story of how the Jews of Persia, though loyal and innocent, faced persecution and
extermination, and were saved only by the courage of one woman and by a series of fortunate coincidences.
The holiday recalls the events that took place around the year 500 BCE as described in the biblical Book of
Esther (the Megillah).

A Purim Puppet show for the younger elementary school children and pre-schoolers will be held on
Wednesday, February 24th at 5 pm on Zoom.

The Megillah will be read Thursday evening, February 25 at 6 pm on our usual Zoom service site. We will
be providing the Hebrew and English on the screen, along with illustrations of the story. A short humorous
skit, a Purimshpiel, will also highlight the evening’s festivities. Please join us from home in costume or
some crazy hat. Bring your own noisemaker
for drowning out the name of the evil Haman. The Megillah
will be read again
as part of Friday morning services beginning at 8 am on Zoom.

Besides hearing the Megillah read, it is Jewish tradition to eat a festive meal, give gifts of food to friends
(Hamantaschen recipe), and give charity to the poor
. We can recommend the following sites for making
your direct donation of tzedaka:

Kitah Zayin Mitzvah Project at Brotherhood, benefiting Feeding America and Doctors Without Borders.

MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger helping the hungry in America, Israel and around the world.

We look forward to a time in the not-too-distant future when we can again join in person in our wonderful
Sanctuary to celebrate our Jewish traditions. In the meantime, click on any
of the buttons at the top of the page to access our Purim content!
