The Brotherhood Synagogue is an inclusive, egalitarian congregation in the Conservative Jewish tradition. We seek to meet the needs of American Jewry and to reach out to those of other faiths with the goal of friendship and understanding. All are invited to join us as we celebrate the values and traditions of our Jewish faith, striving for the ways of peace and righteousness. Our synagogue is located in downtown New York City, on Gramercy Park.

Veterans Shabbat
Friday, Nov 7th 6:30p to 7:30pPlease join the Social Action Committee at services for Veterans’ Shabbat when our guest speaker will be Colonel Benjamin Wallen. Colonel Wallen is the Associate Dean for Faculty Development of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He is the Jewish Lay Leader for West Point and the Officer-in-Charge of Hillel. He will share with us the state and nature of Jewish life at the Academy. All veterans of the United States military and the Israel Defense Forces are urged to attend to be honored and everyone is invited and urged to attend and honor our veterans.

Mah Jongg & Canasta Sunday Brunch

We will provide the Mah Jongg and Canasta sets, tables, and food. If you’re playing Mah Jongg, you must bring your own Mah Jongg card. Cost: $15 for members | $20 for nonmembers
Welcoming the Stranger: The Sanctuary of New York City
Thursday, Nov 20th 7:00p to 8:00pWe are thrilled to welcome back Ruth Messinger, who will lead off the session with a lively discussion touching on the legal meaning of the oft-confused phrase and the moral obligation we have as New Yorkers. A leader from the one of the non-profit organizations supporting immigrants will then focus on how New York’s religious and nonprofit communities are providing shelter and basic services to asylum-seeking immigrants. The session will be moderated by Rebecca Neuwirth, Chief Strategy Officer.

Working together as a kehilah, our goal is to foster excitement and connection among young people through singing and performing new and familiar Jewish music. Canasta for Beginners - Fall 2025

Canasta is fun to learn and is most commonly played by four in two partnerships with two standard decks of cards. Make some new friends while learning to play this popular card game!
Advanced Beginners Hebrew

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Judaism (But Were Afraid to Ask)

Conversion Class with Cantor Isaac Yager
Wednesday, Nov 5th 6:30p to 7:30pIn the spirit in which Ruth was welcomed into the Jewish community, Brotherhood Synagogue offers conversion classes to those interested in joining the Jewish faith. Classes run from October through June and meet on Wednesdays from 6:30-7:30 in person at the synagogue. Admission to the class is accepted on a rolling basis based on the individual, all experience levels with Judaism are welcome to inquire. Conversion classes are provided at no cost, though participants are requested to make a donation to Brotherhood Synagogue in an amount of their choosing at the end of the conversion process. Please contact Cantor Yager or Rabbi Alder if you are interested in the program.
Lunch and Learn Fall 2025
Thursday, Nov 6th 12:30p to 1:30pJoin us for lunch on Thursdays as we discuss, learn, and engage in Jewish textual study, specifically the Parashat Hashavuah (weekly Torah reading). Following in the footsteps of the generations that preceded us, we will continue the long legacy of commenting and intellectually dissecting Jewish texts from the Torah, the book of Prophets, and other holy texts. Questions will be encouraged and debate is inevitable. This will be an inclusive, non judgmental learning environment where everyone's voice will have equal value. No prior text study is required. All are welcome to attend and participate.
